Michael Moore’s Sicko
Sicko may well be the best film you watch this year, particularly if you are concerned about the current healthcare debate.
That debate, of course, is not about health care per se, but about how best to pay for it. Occasionally you will find mention of a single-payer system (universal health care) but most often the only option up for discussion is how to eke worthwhile healthcare out of the current system run by large private insurance companies.
That system, of course, leaves almost 50 million Americans uninsured. Perhaps even more sad is that many of those who think they are insured really aren’t. The problem is that under the current arrangement, you don’t really know what your insurance will cover until you need it. At that point, it may be too late. (See the Donna Smith interview for an example of that.)
If you have already seen the Wendell Potter interview, you must be eager to see Sicko. If you have not, or if you have doubts for any reason about wanting to see Michael Moore’s film, we suggest you watch the Potter interview now. (It’s much shorter than the movie. Wendell Potter was an insurance industry executive until recently, and in this interview he reveals—among other things—how he personally helped to discredit Michael Moore and this movie. He confesses, in fact, that “I thought he hit the nail on the head with this movie.”)
